Chief Warrant Officer 5 John A. Robinson

CW5 John A. Robinson is the third chief warrant officer of the field artillery (FA). He enlisted as a FA fire support specialist in 1988 and was appointed a warrant officer FA targeting technician in 1995. He holds a Bachelors degree in education from the University of Maine; three Masters degrees in military art & science (Command & General Staff College), international relations (Webster University) and criminal justice (Troy University); and a Doctoral degree in education from Argosy University. His military education includes the Warrant Officer Basic and Advance Courses, Warrant Officer Staff and Senior Staff Courses, Command & General Staff College Intermediate Level Education, the School of Advanced Military Studies and the Army War College Defense Strategy Course. He was an exchange student at both the General Staff College of the German Armed Forces (Führungsakademie der Bundeswehr) and the U.S. Air Force (USAF) Air University School of Advanced Air and Space Studies.


Robinson’s functional training courses include Joint Firepower Control, Joint Aerospace Command and Control, Joint Targeting, Joint Battle Damage Assessment, Collateral Damage Estimate, Information Operations Qualification, USAF Information Operations Integration, Theater Nuclear Operations, Red Team Member, USAF Air Movement, Aerial Fire Support Observer, Jungle Warfare Training, Area NBC Officer Defense, Jumpmaster, Air Assault, Army Basic Instructor and Systems Approach to Training Basic.

Robinson served as a leader and staff officer at every echelon of the joint force, including 14 different staffs at battalion, brigade, division, corps or joint task force, Army service component command/theater Army, combatant command, Army command and two numbered Air Forces. He has four combat tours in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Middle East and was continuously engaged in the Global War on Terror from 2002 to 2013 at progressively higher levels of responsibility. He also served as director, Department of Joint, Interagency and Multinational Operations, US Army Warrant Officer Career College.


His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (with one oak leaf cluster (OLC)), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with five OLC), Army Commendation Medal (with three OLC), Army Achievement Medal (with six OLC), Humanitarian Service Medal, Aviation Badge, Master Parachutist Badge and Air Assault Badge. He is a recipient of the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara and is an Army Senior Instructor.

Robinson is married to the former Karen Roberts of Pittsburgh, Penn. and they have one son, Robert.
