SgtMaj Lawrence P Fineran

Sergeant Major Fineran enlisted in the Marine Corps in September 1984 and completed recruit training with Golf Company, 2d Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA. 

Upon completion of recruit training, SgtMaj Fineran reported to Camp Pendleton, CA to attend Infantry Training School (ITS) and was designated as an 0311, Infantryman.

In March of 1985, SgtMaj Fineran returned to MCRD, San Diego to attend Sea School.  After school, he was ordered aboard the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal (CV-59) in Mayport, FL, where he served as the Corporal and Sergeant of the Guard and completed two deployments to the Mediterranean Sea. 

Upon completion of his tour SgtMaj Fineran was transferred to Camp Lejeune, NC for duty with 3d Battalion, 2d Marines, 2d Marine

Division where he served as a Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant. 

In May 1989, SgtMaj Fineran reported to Marine Security Guard School in Quantico, VA.  Following completion of his schooling, he reported to the Embassy in Casablanca, Morocco.  During his tour as a Marine Security Guard, SgtMaj Fineran served at the American Embassy in Sana’a, Yemen, Copenhagen, Denmark, and Brussles, Belgium and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

In June 1992, SgtMaj Fineran was transferred to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 2d Marines, 2d Marine Division in Camp Lejeune, NC.  During this tour he filled several billets to include, Infantry Platoon Sergeant, Company Gunnery Sergeant, Scout Sniper Platoon Sergeant, and Regimental Reconnaissance Platoon Sergeant.  Additionally, SgtMaj Fineran participated in Operations Restore Hope and Democracy in Somalia and Cuba.

SgtMaj Fineran then transferred to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island for duty as a Drill Instructor with Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion.  During this assignment he held the billets of Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Series Gunnery Sergeant.

In August 1998, SgtMaj Fineran returned to Camp Lejeune, NC for duty with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, 2d Marine Division where he served as Company Gunnery Sergeant.  In April 2000 he was promoted to First Sergeant and served as the Company First Sergeant of Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines.  During his tour, SgtMaj Fineran completed two deployments and participated in two cold weather packages to Bridgeport, California and Norway.

In July 2001, SgtMaj Fineran returned to MCRD, Parris Island, SC and assumed duties as the Company First Sergeant, India Company, 3d Recruit Training Battalion.  During May of 2002 he served as the Company First Sergeant, Mike Company, 3d Recruit Training Battalion.  In September 2003 SgtMaj Fineran was reassigned to Drill Instructor School at MCRD Parris Island as the First Sergeant/Chief Instructor.

SgtMaj Fineran was promoted to his present rank in July 2005 and was assigned as the Battalion Sergeant Major of 3d Radio Battalion, located at MCBH Kaneohe Bay.  During this tour, SgtMaj Fineran deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

SgtMaj Fineran posted as the SgtMaj of the Marine Artillery Detachment, Fort Sill Oklahoma on 22 March 2008. 

SgtMaj Fineran's personal awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5th award), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3rd award).
