Fort Sill Status - April 2021: The Army is investigating potential releases of certain per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS. PFOA and PFOS are the most extensively studied and historically, the most widely-used throughout the U.S. These substances may be present in soil and/or groundwater at Army installations from PFAS-containing aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) or from other sources. (PFAS Fact Sheet)

The Army conducted a preliminary assessment at Fort Sill and identified 8 sites where PFAS releases occurred or are suspected to have occurred on the installation. Fort Sill receives its water supply from the City of Lawton. The city's last Consumer Confidence Report showed no PFAS in their supply above the EPA's health advisory levels. (CDC Guidance)

To ensure no one off post is affected by PFAS in ground water, Fort Sill is reaching out to homeowners outlined in the area that receive drinking water from private wells (i.e. not Lawton’s municipal water supply) to test for PFAS at no charge to the homeowner. (See Map)

The Army’s No. 1 priority for PFAS is to ensure no one is drinking water above the EPA’s lifetime health advisory levels due to Army operations.

The Army follows the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA) process to fully investigate releases, prioritize responses, and determine appropriate cleanup actions. The Fort Sill Natural Resources Mission is to provide professional management and stewardship of natural resources at Fort Sill to achieve optimum use of training lands, promote biodiversity and ecosystem functionality, provide opportunities for multiple uses of natural resources, and comply with environmental laws.

We are located west of White Wolf crossing along Medicine Creek. Once you can find the south western edge of the golf course you can follow Punch Bowl Road to the west and look to the south.

Natural Resources management involves many military and civilian missions on post. Much of our work and many of our missions go on behind the scene. Some of these have us working nights, weekends and unique schedules. Our missions are mainly based on federal law and executive orders with some based in regulation. These involve migratory birds, threatened or endangered species, Ag leasing, wildlife or fisheries management, ecosystem management and sustainability. You can reach us for questions at 442-4324 or 442-1010.

Recreational access is where most users interface with us. Hunters, fishermen, ATV riders using the Pig Farm Crossing ATV area… This is done at Sportsman Services. Sportsman Services, located in building 1458, can be reached at 580-442-3553. See the intranet or come by during office hours for specific regulations, circulars and memos for eligibility, timing and access requirements.

With the recent loss of Borrow Military Manpower (BMM), Sportsman Services will be transitioning to new hours and check in/out requirements. Desk hours are limited on Tuesday through Saturday. You can buy post hunting and fishing permits during these hours.

The Sportsmen Safety Class is required for anyone using the range for recreation. It is offered each Thursday at 1200 in building 1465. Allow yourself extra time to get signed in and seated. This class is a command safety requirement prior to any recreational use of the ranges.

Sportsman Services license sales hours of operations are 0900 - 1500 Tuesday through Friday. You can buy post hunting and fishing permits during these hours.

A Self-Checkout Station is located in Building 1464, it is available for use by existing permit holders 24 hours a day. However, on each Monday the Ranges are closed to all recreational activities.
