Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst graduated from of the University of Idaho in 2005 with a Public Administration Masters and BA in History. The following year, through the Officer Candidate Course he received a commission in the United States Marine Corps.
Upon completion of The Basic School, Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst attended Field Artillery Basic Officers Course at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma in 2006 and achieved the Military Occupational Specialty of Field Artillery Officer. In 2006, Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst was assigned to 1st Bn, 12th Marine Regiment, 3d Marine Division aboard Kaneohe Bay Hawaii, where he served as a Forward Observer and Platoon Commander for Battery C, and Battery XO for Battery A. During his time with 1st Bn, 12th Marines, Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Following his time in Hawaii, Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst was assigned to 2d Tank Battalion 2d Marine Division in Camp Lejeune North Carolina in 2010. There he served as the Fire Support Coordinator for the Battalion. In 2011, Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst deployed out of the Battalion as an Individual Augment to work for ISAF Joint Command in support Operation Enduring Freedom in Kabul Afghanistan. Upon returning from Afghanistan, Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst resumed his duties as Fire Support Coordinator for 2d Tank Battalion.
In 2013, Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst was assigned to 1st Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division. Where he assumed the duties as the Assistant Logistics Officer/Logistics Officer for the Battalion. In the Spring of 2014, Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst assumed the duties of Commanding Officer Battery A, 1st Battalion 10th Marine Regiment. In the Spring of 2015, Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst relinquished command of Battery A and assumed the billet of Battalion Operations Officer. In the Fall of 2015, Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst assumed command of an experimental Combined Arms Company under 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment in support of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Europe and Africa operational rotation to the Black Sea Area of Responsibility. Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst served in the capacity until the summer of 2016.
In the Summer of 2016 Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst reported for duty as Naval Surface Fires Branch Head at Expeditionary Warfare Training Group- Pacific, Naval Amphibious Base Coronado California. There he supervised the Naval Gunfire training for 3d and 7th Fleet ships., as well as instruction and certification of Supporting Arms Coordination Centers aboard 11th, 13th, 15th, and 31st Marine Expeditionary Units. In the Fall of 2018 Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst was selected to attend Marine Corps Command and Staff College in the summer of 2019.
Following a successful completion of Marine Corps Command and Staff in summer of 2020, Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst reported for duty as the Battalion Logistics Officer to 3d Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3d Marine Division aboard Camp Hansen Okinawa Japan. In spring of 2021, Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst assumed the duties of Battalion Executive Officer for 3d Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment. In Spring of 2022, Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst assumed the duties of Fire Support Coordinator, 12th Marine Regiment.
Upon receiving orders in 2023, Lieutenant Colonel Steinhorst transferred to his current billet as Executive Officer Marine Detachment- Fort Sill.
