History of 3rd Battalion, 2nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment (3-2 ADA)

Lineage & Formation

  • The 2nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment traces its origins back to 25 January 1907, when it was organized as part of the U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps.
  • The 3rd Battalion, 2nd ADA was officially constituted and activated in the 20th century as part of the broader reorganization of air defense artillery units.
  • Over the years, the battalion has been reorganized and redesignated multiple times, reflecting the evolving doctrine and technology of air defense warfare.


Regimental Honors
As a unit within the 2nd ADA Regiment, 3-2 ADA shares in the honors and campaign participation credits of the regiment, which include:
  • World War I: Service in France (Coast Artillery operations)
  • World War II: Defense of the continental U.S. and later deployment to the Pacific
  • Vietnam War: Participated in multiple campaigns under different battalion designations
  • Global War on Terrorism: Deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom


Modern Role
  • 3-2 ADA is a PATRIOT missile battalion, equipped with the Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target (PATRIOT) system.

  • The battalion is typically part of the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command (AAMDC) or one of its subordinate brigades.


Recent Operations
3-2 ADA has supported numerous overseas contingency operations, including rotational deployments to:

  • The Middle East (e.g., CENTCOM AOR)
  • Joint training and multinational exercises with NATO and Indo-Pacific allies


Location
  • As of recent years, 3-2 ADA is stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, a hub for U.S. Army Fires and Air Defense Artillery training.
  • The unit regularly trains at Quanah Range and other field sites, maintaining readiness for rapid deployment.
