BSEP provides Soldiers with the academic skills necessary to raise their GT score to 110 or higher on the Armed Forces Classification Test (AFCT). The goal is to improve job performance, prepare Soldiers for more advanced schooling, increase reenlistment options, and promote retention.

Participation in BSEP provides lessons addressing three specific AFCT subtests that comprise the GT score: Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Arithmetic Reasoning.

Word Knowledge: Ability to correctly match vocabulary words with definitions and synonyms and to define the part of speech of at least 180 basic vocabulary words.

Paragraph Comprehension: Ability to analyze and evaluate the use of text structure to solve problems or identify sequences, draw logical inferences and conclusions, and identify the author’s intent.

Arithmetic Reasoning: Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the “language” of mathematics by their use of symbols, definitions, and word phrases, display proficiency in mathematical computations, and implement mathematical techniques to solve applied problems.
